The
Atmosphere:
Cute, cozy and unpretentious, Crystal Café is a neighborhood
favorite, largely due to its generous portions, moderate prices and
attentive, solicitous service. With a low ceiling and lots of
sound-reflective surfaces, the dining room can get pretty noisy, so
if you're inclined to whispering sweet nothings or making quiet
conversation, ask for a seat at one of the comfy banquettes along
the right-hand wall.
The Food:
The lengthy menu of complex dishes is quite impressive.
Unfortunately, many of them seem clunky and lacking in finesse.
Appetizers, like a daunting serving of foie gras with grilled
portobello and sauteed apples and tuna tartar with crème fraiche
and salmon roe, were more successful than entrees. Duck a l'orange
was tough and dry and lacked the promised crispy skin; seafood
"osso buco" featured fishy-tasting salmon, gummy risotto
and heavy, viscous lobster sauce. Fruit-filled dessert crepe with
banana ice cream, though, was homey and satisfying.
